Tesco secret police are watching what you buy

Question: Why did Tesco try to spoil a charity event? Answer: Because they can

Today I went into the Tesco extra store at Trostre Park in Llanelli to purchase 50 boxes of mince pies (200 mince pies in total) together with tea, coffee, milk, sugar and squash to provide refreshments at a charity concert organised to raise funds for the British Heart Foundation. There were plenty of mince pies on the shelves and I was not asking for any discount – I was just purchasing everything at the full retail price.

At the checkout, the cashier was good humoured and we laughed about the quantity of mince pies as I loaded up the conveyor. Clearly the cashier had no problem with processing my purchases. However, a manager approached me and stated ‘You cannot purchase all those mince pies. You will be depriving other customers.’ I explained that there were plenty left on the shelves. He would have none of it. He said that it was not company policy to sell in large quantities. I explained that they were for a charity concert taking place in a matter of hours, but he would have none of it. No matter how much pleading I did, I met with a ‘stone wall response’ from Tesco’s Gestapo manager, Mr Jobsworth (Its more than my job’s worth to……..) I had to leave my purchases and leave the store.

It was not as if I had cleared the shelves of all the mince pies! Neither was it that I was asking for a donation from Tesco or even asking for a discount. I was not!

Fortunately, although I wasted a lot of time, energy and even money by going to Tesco, another company saved the day. I telephoned the duty Manager at ASDA in Llanelli and was met with the response “They will be waiting for you ready boxed on the bakery counter in five minutes”.

All I can say is ‘What a difference in response!’

Asda's bakery mince pies are much better than Tesco's anyway so have a good charity event and tell everyone there about the Tesco scrooges and the Asda angels!

This is absolutely typical of the thuggish and downright nasty attitude of many Tesco managers nowadays. At some point over the last 10 years Tesco stopped teaching its staff the importance of good customer service and community relations.

Precisely, I work for Tesco by the way, but have no problem in allowing large amounts of the same item to pass through my till. I believe the policy of "No more than 10 items per customer" isn't about saving stock for other customers, but more likely an effort to stop people cashing in on offers, etc, and selling them on at profit! From time to time we sell little packets of stickers, which cost ten pence each, and thousands appear in the store. On several occasions people have bought more than ten, and I don't see why this is unreasonable, yet the middle management, with their small amount of power, cannot wait for an excuse to pounce on the customer attempting to buy these items, and the staff for daring to allow the sale. In the case of the mince pies, I think it is disgusting. There are always large stocks of mince pies around this time of year, obviously, and with deliveries up to 3 times per day, there was no reason why they couldn't have allowed this amount of mince pies, especially for such a good cause. I'm sick of the attitude of middle management in the stores, and think they need to re-think their policies, fast.

As Sir Terry says with respect to Charity: "Every little helps when everyone pulls in the same direction."

However when one jobsworth Tesco manager cannot use discretion then his little "help" can cause huge problems.

We hope the fundraising for the British Heart Foundation went well in spite of Tesco's spoiling efforts.

Perhaps Tesco should send a donation to the British Heart Foundation to make up for this error? Peter - why not email them this post (using the "email post" graphic button above) and invite them to do so. Send the email to Terry.Leahy@uk.tesco.com and let us know their response.

50 Boxes? I bet they had more than that sitting in the warehouse and probably more on the way.

Likewise I hope the fundraising went well in spite of Tesco. Don't hold you're breath for that donation though.

Im going to put this in a way you all may under stand.

Tesco carrys enough stock for that day, with some high selling lines having upto 50% capicity sitting in the warehouse, warehouses are very very small much smaller than you can imagine, this is due to the continous replenishment, day and night.

Now the stock ordering system, ok lets say its Monday and you come in and buy 50 boxes of pies now on a normal monday the store will sell 40 from 8am to 8pm so now YOU have emptied the shelf at say 12am the stock control computer will now react to that and boost nxt mondays stock to say 80 yet next monday you arent there to buy, so they go on waste which cost Tesco money which then gets passed onto the customer.

THIS IS THE MAIN REASON

TESCO TRYS TO ENSURE EVERY CUSTOMER CAN GET WHAT THEY WANT. IT IS NOT A WHOLESALER .PEOPLE DONT SHOP AT TESCO IN BULK

SOUND LIKE TESCO NEED TO GET A MORE CLEVERER COMPUTER INNIT. AN TYPING IN CAPITALS MAKES ME RITE AN YOO RONG. OK FOOL!

No its just that silly people buying bulk items spoils it for everyone else. Tesco has a certain amount of stock on the shelves to meet demand for that particular day however if someone wants a large amount then they need to do a customer order to ensure everyone gets what they want when they want.
You silly sausage

IT doesnt spoil anything for anyone.

You are just being a miserable Tesco employee.

Get a grip, the computer is cleverer than you.

Listen If you walked into your local shop for a box of mince pies that you have searched all the other stores for and they were out of stock then when you were going through the tills you saw another shopper with their trolley full of mince pies how would that make you feel?

To quoto the person that said this

"Now the stock ordering system, ok lets say its Monday and you come in and buy 50 boxes of pies now on a normal monday the store will sell 40 from 8am to 8pm so now YOU have emptied the shelf at say 12am the stock control computer will now react to that and boost nxt mondays stock to say 80 yet next monday you arent there to buy, so they go on waste which cost Tesco money which then gets passed onto the customer."

You can set the system to un-react. Read your stock control manual :)

Pretty sure its the person who was abusing me and who thought a van was a truck because he/she/it couldnt read so doubt they would ever understand a manual!

This is completely idiotic. Tesco is a retailer, not a wholesaler!

If you want a "large quantity" of an item, just ask at the customer service desk about placing a special "customer order" - they only need a few days notice at the most, and you avoid disrupting the supply chain and other customers.

Anonymous said...

So that makes Asda a wholesaler then does it?

Or just simply a better customer-focused supermarket?

Your point Willy is thus nonsense.

This point aint nonsence, Peter phoned ASDA's manager to ask if the request for mince pies would be possible, he went into the Tesco store looking to by 50 boxes without phoning.
