Tesco Staff: rat problem is bigger than you know!

The Andover Advertiser reports: An Andover Tesco superstore worker claims their rat problem is far bigger than has previously been suggested by the supermarket - and the infestation has been known about for at least 18 months.

But Tesco strongly refute the claim, saying they would have been shut down if that were so.

The store worker, who does not wish to be identified for fear of losing his job, claimed trays used in the home delivery service (the dot-com delivery area) were regularly found covered in rat droppings. He said staff joked about getting a cat in to deal with the vermin.

He said: "They've known they've had rats for ages but there's nothing they will do about it.

"If it was a little bakery or corner shop then a health inspector would be straight in there but because it's Tesco they think they can get away with it."

The worker said the issue was only being resolved now because of the Andover Advertiser breaking the story three weeks ago.

The original report of a mum spotting a rat inside the River Way superstore has generated dozens of comments on the Andover Advertiser's website since 20 April. Most of the comments state readers' disgust at Tesco's handling of the situation.

But a spokesman for Tesco said:"It's absolute rubbish that there have been rat droppings in the dot-com' delivery area. It's complete nonsense and I would query that source of information. We would refute these claims very strongly.

"The main thing to point out is that if there was any problem at all and the Environmental Health and Health and Safety Officers were concerned they would shut the place and of course that's not happened.

"Staff are taking it very seriously. There might be one or two junior guys that find it quite amusing but we take it very seriously.

"As for it only being sorted out because of the newspaper's involvement, well that's just complete nonsense."

In response to the original story on the 20 April a Tesco spokesman said that the store was aware of the problem but was adamant there was no risk to customers.

He said: "It's a case of taking every possible step we can to make sure these horrible things don't gain access."

A spokesperson for Test Valley Borough Council said: "Tesco has received, and will continue to receive, regular visits from the council as part of our regular food hygiene programme.

"We have been working closely with the store's management and the company's pest control service.

"They continue to take pest proofing measures which we will review with them."

Sounds a load of rubbish to me.

"If it was a little bakery or corner shop then a health inspector would be straight in there but because it's Tesco they think they can get away with it."

Then

"A spokesperson for Test Valley Borough Council said: "Tesco has received, and will continue to receive, regular visits from the council as part of our regular food hygiene programme."

So have they visited or not?

Just moaning about Tescos again for the sake of it!

Who are these invisible spokesmen we all keep hearing about!? Why dosen't the big man himself come out and speak? Lets face it,us poor shop owners have to deal with less petty things than this, get roasted for it and don't get paid 4 million bangers a year lol,Of coarse there is going to be rat crap all over the place, there is allways vermin 20 feet in any persons radius, where there is food it's an attraction,of coarse im sure there is plenty of top brass vermin in tesco anyway, only difference is that their craps are bigger;-), so for the facless spokesman from tesco once again, I choose to be a spokesman from here;-)
Have a nice day tesco I hope the rats eat all your stores including the foundations.

Not surprised there are rats ther to be honest with you if more people are getting fed up with the way tesco treat people i for one had to take action by using a changing room as a lavatory with some value toilet tissue i hope that taught them a valuable lesson in customer service

I was employed as loss prevention Manager at Crick Distribution Center. On 14th December 2006 a trailer was stolen from a temporary site rented by Tesco that I was responsible for. A guard allowed a tractor unit onto site without checking and off again with a loaded trailer without checking, contrary to my written instruction. I returned to work despite being in from that morning and carried out an investigation. I remained at work all night and had to see the General manager the following morning. I had been awake for 31 hours when he interviewed me. I was suspended without notice of suspension or signing the notes. I was investigated and a week later (December 21st) called in for a disciplinary hearing by the same General Manager. I was given a final written warning. I had a crap chrismas and was nervous about my future which was non-existant after that. I found out that staff had been lied to as to why I was off and they found it funny as they had seen a letter of my suspension on the desk in admin. I had no help at all as the decision to suspend me came from a distribution director. I appealed on the grounds that data protection had been breached by leaving the letter out. The same GM shouted at me in the presence of the personnel officer demanding to know who had advised me to appeal. Finally my discipline was removed from my file but then they started criticising my performance which up to that time had been ok. Finally I filed a grievance as I wanted to move but found out that my role was due to be changed and I was to be interviewed for my own job. I left the greivance as I had no other job and faced reduncancy. I was moved to a lower role at another branch but had to work nights to get the same pay. After a month I left as I had another job to go to. I was bullied, treated with contempt and ignored by the Tesco hierarchy who swept the issue under the carpet saying it was "strong management". On my final day I was seen by my GM (again who told me I was no longer loss prevention manager and I was to go), All in all I was treated like dirt and have not had the courtesy of even a Thank you from Tesco.

I'd just like to say as an ex-employee of the Sunbury Tesco store - rats and mice were seen very often in and around the store. One afternoon a little old lady went up to the customer service desk to tell staff when she'd picked a packet of buscuits off the shelf there were two mice and I quote `playing' behind the pack she'd chosen. That night all the managers were drafted in and the store closed to deal with the situation. They were just a few hours from having a notice slapped on them by the health inspectors.

I work at Warrington Extra and rats, mice & urban foxes are frequently spotted in our yard & car park. In the 4 years that I've worked there I've only known the yard to be cleaned the once. In places the rubbish is knee deep so it's hardly surprising that we have a vermin problem and as the warehouse shutters are left open for most of the day it's inevitable that the cute little critters will come inside. If only the customers knew.

I drop a leave a response when I especially enjoy a

And after this post "Tesco Staff: rat problem is bigger than you know!".
I was actually excited enough to drop a thought ;

be only me or does it appear like a few of the comments come across
