Tesco Nightworkers Depressed ~ Tesco-Complaint

Tesco Nightworkers Depressed

Ive been working for Tesco for about 5 years pretty much. Market Deeping (2875) store. I work at nights with a few others and feel very very depressed. Because from what we see is that the whole store is relying on us all the time. And when something fails its all our fault. Yet things could be sorted out in the day if they work around things better instead of relying on us 100%. Cause the grocery department workers mainly at night. And about 4 in the day.

And to make it even more stupid. Our store manager apparently came up with this idea letting us have christmas eve off if we work Boxing day this year. Now that be taking the biscuit far as i'm concerned. Its a national holiday. So it aint gonna happen no matter what.

But the main thing that is really upsetting me the most is, The constant relying on me. Just cause i know a fair bit of the shopfloor and stuff. Doesn't mean i should be a Jack of all trades compared to the other G.A's. Everyone should be treated the same. And i do hate the constant asking on how im getting on and which gives me the feeling they need an extra body somewhere else every 5 seconds. Or i aint going fast enough for them.

And last off all. Ever since the nights have been going. We dont get the great food benefits compared to the days. All we got is Sweets and rock hard sandwichs in the vendor machines. Bit unfair dont you think.

Came across this site by accident,it's fantastic.
I don't think Tesco will take a blind bit of notice to anything said on it though.
I was a part time GA nights
just got a new job so I am no longer working nightshift for Tesco and it is great feeling to be out of it.
one of the things this company has started doing is turning cutting the lighting in our store at about 12pm, it is reduced by cutting out half the lights (50%
This has a weird effect on the body of nightshift worker because the bodies natural reaction to this is to want to go into sleep mode.I thought Tesco makes a 2.2billion profit. !Every little helps!
HERES SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT
If you asked someone to mow your lawns front and back and it took them 1 hour would you hand him 7 quid? ( I dont't think so)How can they justify this rate of pay?.

i work nights 4 tesco 4 7 years and ive see it go rapidly down hill less staff more work

Have you ever checked to see what the average retail sales assistant wage is!

I'm a night manager for one of Tesco's competitors, (Morrisons), and I can sympathise with everything the author said. I have 21 years in retail and never has it been so difficult. No staff, ever increasing work loads, bullying managers, unable to hold on to new starts because you just cant get the time to train them! Also, we are treated like slaves by the company. 30% lighting levels during the night, The same piped music every bloody night, (no radio's allowed), empty vending machines, drinking water machine usually has no cups left too. Worn out equipment added to pallets that are built too high and too heavy causes aches and pains on all the shift! Its hard for day staff too. Bottom line is that the company don't give a toss.

Anonymous said...

Its not just your store mate.Ive recently left a failing night team where the amount of pressure put onto the "good" performing guys is now starting to take its toll with people leaving or thinking of leaving to go to other retailers.Same with food,it used to be left for us and on further investigation it was found that the food they wanted us to re heat had been stood on the serving counter for best part of an hour earlier in the day,yes you got it left overs from days.Even when this stopped it was expected of the night managers to cook.basically penny pinching to save on the wage bill.........Morale everywhere is at its lowest since I had started over 5 years ago.thankfully im in a better place.Do yourself a favour get out now there is life after Tesco!

Anonymous said...

Seems if you're a tit at work you get taken by the hand while the good guys who can do a job get the piss ripped from them.

Anonymous said...

Moan, moan, moan. My daughter wants to work for Tesco, but she doesn't like your language. You all moan alot and fall asleep when the lights go out. Nobody should get £7 an hour for being asleep at work. My daughter gets £10 for delivering papers for 2 and a half hours work.

Anonymous said...

Yea and we've only got one sugar shaker in our restaurant for 600 people too.

Anonymous said...

Fall asleep when the lights go out? get a grip you tool. Who do you think fills the store up again? Magical elves during the night? You clearly know bugger all about it so piss off.

Anonymous said...

I've worked on nights for the last 5 years at the ely store and it's just going down hill. Twice as much work with fewer staff. Our shopfloor day staff are made to sit on the tills all day and when they do come off there are no managers around to point out priority work. Think they are all haveing a fag breaks. This puts all the filling work on to nights.
I don't mind hard work (makes time fly)but because we are so busy every thing feels so rushed, no care taken and thrown together.

P.S I've never had the time to fall asleep at work!!!

Anonymous said...

Yes it seems all the food retailers are going down hill, and treating their staff like slaves...
I used to work for Sainsbury's and they are just the same as Tesco's with regards to lack of staff, pressure to complete, day staff stuck on tills, re-heated food and ignorant managers who mis-manage their staff.
Glad I got out of food retail altogether......

With regard to the Xmas hours mentioned by Alex...I would much prefer to work Boxing day night than Xmas eve night! Do you not want to be awake on xmas day to enjoy the festivities with the family?

Also the night food situation...I can only sympathies we have a night chef at our Tesco and there is always a nice range of freshly prepared food.

Anonymous said...

Ive got the answer to your problem, simple.
Leave!
Avoid working for any big organisation again, work for local caring family business;-)
Then you will wonder why you put up with what you did!
Good luck

I've been working at Tescos for around 4 months now.. filling up the freezers.
I'm already sick of it.
I'm generally not one to moan and I am genuinely a very hard worker, but the expectations pressured onto employees are tremendous.
I worked my back and balls off one night to get every last bit of stock out last week (very busy xmas night also worked an extra hour) and instead of any form of 'well done', i was told that if i could do that one night i can do it everynight no excuses.
bottom line:
staff are lovely
food is nice
managers are *****

Anonymous said...

Great food you say which store you working at mate, you shagging the cook or something. The catering is tendered out and the food is absouluty shit and guess what the management don't care

Anonymous said...

tesco night shift r hard workers who r made 2 work even harder because of so many leaving and not getting replaced saying they cant afford to take on more staff.come on who r they trying to kid! we still have to do the same amount of work on a 1/4 of the staff we had a year ago and we all complain constantly but their attitude is if u dont like it u know where the door is.

Anonymous said...

I work at a store in chelmsford been there 6months, since i been there i been pressured into working like a robot having the night manager coming to me every hour or so asking if im done so i can go do his work . . . I have also recently injured myself at work filling produce, noone around for help lifting the heavier stock on top shelves and when i tore all my muscles in chest and stomach i get told that if im not back in couple of weeks i wont have tesco's support and ill be released! Its a Joke!

Anonymous said...

I work nights for Tesco. The staffing levels have steadily fallen, the amount of work has steadily increased. The managers are complete bullies, its almost Dickensian the way they treat people now. My moan though concerns sickness. I recently broke my ankle and needed an operation to pin the bone back together. The day it happened (before going to the hospital) I phoned in to tell them that I was going to the hospital. I was in real pain sitting there on the phone to a manager. All he could say was "When can you come in? If you cant stand and work you can do some sit down work (keep in mind I work nights and our store isn't open so checkout is not an option). He kept on at me not letting me get off the phone for ages, while I sat there in agony, listening to his drivel. Not once did he even ask how I was. My consultant at the hospital has said that I cannot do any work of any kind for at least 4 weeks.....Tesco however are demanding that I come back as soon as I am able to crawl there.........Bullying nasty bunch of assholes that couldn't care less about the welfare of their staff and an obvious training course for managers designed by Atilla the hun!!!!!

Anonymous said...

Whinge whinge whinge, go and join the two million plus people in the dole queue then and give someone else a chance, either that or stop moaning and get on with your job! Ps where else could you get £8.50 per hour (including premiums) for doing such basic work?

Anonymous said...

£8.50 an hour for night shift? I'm getting less than £8 and they work us like dogs. No talking to other employees, constantly moaning at you to do more, even though you are working really hard. They want their pound of flesh...literally. I have lost almost a stone in 3 months because they work us so hard. Financially I am no better off than on the dole, when you take into account housing benefit, council tax benefit and jobseekers allowance that could be claimed. Being on the dole would be a big step up for me!

Anonymous said...

I am a manager for Tesco and although I do agree that things have got harder, I think people just need to be glad they have a job at all!! Believe it or not we do care about our staff and we work bloody hard. I for example worked 65 hour weeks through December to keep the shop going and our customers happy. We're here to serve our customers who pay our Market leading and pretty reasonable wages so remember that before you moan. If you can't hack it, grow some nuts and get lost!

Anonymous said...

"If you can't hack it, grow some nuts and get lost!" That's the managers attitude right there folks, exactly what most of you have been saying. If you don't like it there's the door. Nice. Trouble is, wherever you work, it's the same. Look after number one, get what you can out of the job, then move on to something better.

Anonymous said...

I wish I could move onto something better but unfortunately I can't thanks to Tesco's ruining your life and a certain store manager who unfortunately does not appreciate good loyal staff or workers -- Tesco's ruin & destroy your life like they done to me -- Tesco's are bad news...

Anonymous said...

Tesco is a brand made up of loads of different people. With in this population you have senior managers , department managers , customer assistants. These people all have different personalities and different attitudes to work , we need to remember that we look at the failings of a company is to look at our own failings on how we deal with change. What have you done to change things other than put up resistance. This is not always the best solution.

Tescos. Asda sainburys morrisons are super conglomerates who make money from insurance. mobile phones and much more also stocks and shares they are choking Britains smaller shops boosting costs of good meat instead or a *beef* horse burger cos they can produce this amount of food quickly. As far as im concerned they are crooks and bullys
